SHORTS BECOMES FIFTH RECIPIENT OF HETZEL AWARD
May 23, 2022
The Kutcher Foundation is honored to announce that Austin Shorts has been named the 2022 recipient of The Larry Hetzel Volleyball Leadership Award. He becomes the fifth recipient of the award since its inception in 2018.
Shorts was a three-time captain of The John Carroll Volleyball Team (twice at the varsity level) and helped lead his squad to the MIAA semifinals for the first time in a decade during his senior season.
He also helped organize a volleyball clinic for elementary and middle school kids with one of his teammates for their senior project.
“I am beyond honored to be this year’s recipient of the Volleyball Leadership Award”, said Shorts. “I take pride in having the opportunity to carry on the legacy of “Coach” Larry Hetzel. Volleyball has taught me a lot about leadership throughout my high school years, and I have valued the lessons I have learned.”
After graduation, Shorts plans to attend Pennsylvania State University.

About the Award: A sudden battle with cancer took the life of “Coach” Larry Hetzel on the morning of August 15, 2017. The Kutcher Foundation established The Volleyball Leadership Award to honor the leadership of Coach Hetzel who impacted many lives at The John Carroll School. He had a true passion for volleyball, and as the coach at John Carroll, he developed leaders both on and off of the court. The Kutcher Foundation provides a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating John Carroll senior on the men’s volleyball team whose leadership skills were greatly influenced by their experience with the volleyball program.
